What are blood glucose meters?
A blood glucose meter analyzes blood and determines the blood glucose level. In addition to the blood glucose meter, you need a lancing device and blood glucose test strips. Most blood glucose meters include either an integrated or a separate lancing device. If this is not the case, you can purchase a lancing device separately.
How do blood glucose meters work?
The blood glucose meter requires a very small amount of blood. To obtain it, use the lancing device. With all meters, the drop of blood should be taken from a fingertip (capillary whole blood). This drop of blood is then drawn into the inserted blood glucose test strip. The meter then analyzes the blood and displays the result. Since the fingertips have good blood circulation, increases and decreases in blood glucose levels can be detected quickly.

Information about the various measurement and display methods
There are two display methods:
- mmol/l = millimoles per liter
- mg/dl = milligrams per deciliter
What is important here is which of these two methods you have been "trained" in, as the displayed values differ significantly. When choosing your blood glucose meter in particular, pay close attention to which display method the meter is configured for.
